“Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane” – Mom
I’ll tell you why. As a child or maybe even recently you may have looked up in the sky and imagined what it must feel like to fly. Well skydiving is about as close as you can get. That is until you learn how to use a wing suit.
Although my dream is to learn how to use a wing suit, everyone has to start somewhere. So I chose to start my journey of flight in Boulder Colorado where I had the opportunity to jump from 18,000 feet above sea level. I cant stress enough how amazing the experience was. I started at 7 AM to get suited up and meet my jumping instructor where I learned all the necessary tricks to make sure my chute opened and I didn’t end up like a pancake. Once I learned the DO’s and DON’Ts it was time to get on the plane. This was the scariest and most heart racing part. I got on to this tiny plane with a long bench for everyone to sit on and no door. We were told to face the rear of the plane which was very different after hundreds of commercial flights having us face forward. They started the plane and we were off.
The plane was loud due to not having a door. This only heightened the experience as my adrenaline was pumping. By watching the rear of the plane you get to see the people and buildings slowly disappear as we got higher and higher. Not going to lie – this is where my brain started to kick in saying “What the hell are you about to do”. Once we reached our cruising altitude it was time to jump. Of course, I was first up.
That face was the face of a man with fear in his eyes but excitement in his heart. Time seemed to stop as I looked around realizing that I was flying (but mostly falling at about 130 MPH). After the initial adrenaline rush my heart began to beat at a normal rhythm as I took in the sights around me. Seeing birds at eye level as well as the gorgeous Flatirons. As we got further from the plane my instructor and I began to play around with the camera man. He grabbed my feet to twirl me around and around. It was a surreal feeling just spinning at such high speeds towards the ground. I felt at total peace.
That is until I pulled the chute and got what may be the worst wedgie of all time.
Even with the epic wedgie it was an amazing experience as we came in for our landing. It made me think of what we as humans are capable of doing. Skydiving was an amazing experience and I cant wait till I jump on my own.
