Sawhill Ponds – Escape in the heart of Boulder Colorado

If you live or are visiting Boulder Colorado sometimes the hustle and bustle can be overwhelming. Maybe you were stressed at work and just want a quick getaway to relax and become one with nature during your lunch break. Sawhill Ponds is one of those great quick escapes. Located just minutes from Pearl street Sawhill Ponds is a hidden away escape that most people don’t know about.

Located East of the Boulder city limits on the west side of 75th Street, 0.6 mile north of Valmont Road is a collection of 18 ponds. Surprisingly this collection of ponds was part of a gravel mining operation and reclamation project that once the mining ceased became a wetlands and home to a variety of wildlife.

I took Loki one afternoon to go and take some photos of what I heard was an amazing serene area. As I found this little cut of a gravel road with a decaying sign saying Sawhill Pond I wasnt sure what to expect. As I drove down the road I saw a nice little area with

picnic tables and seating to overlook the main pond. Although there were a couple cars, I didn’t see anyone nearly the entire time I was there.

Loki and I walked around the trail which is around 1.5 miles long taking photos and spotting wildlife such as ducks. Tons of ducks. As we walked we would stop

at the wood benches around the ponds to take in the sights. It was nice being alone while so close to the city.

Towards the end of our walk I notice some fishermen that say it’s some of the best bass fishing around. I’m not much of a fisherman myself but if that’s your cup of tea, I recommend giving Sawhill Ponds a try. One way or another the trip at Sawhill ponds can last as little as 30 minutes or a place to unwind for several hours.
